| CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR GREETINGS FROM THE BTA / LOYA |
December 2006 |
2006 has been another eventful year for the British Toilet Association and the Loo of the Year Awards.
The campaign to raise standards is gathering momentum and we recently met with Communities and Local Government Minister, Phil Woolas, at his request, to follow up the positive political messages he presented to our Public Toilet Seminar in July, held jointly with Encams.
The Minister is keen to establish a Steering Group to ensure that all the relevant issues are properly addressed, before a UK wide public toilet provision strategy is prepared. The BTA will be taking a lead in this.
We were also advised at our meeting that ‘No 10’ had indicated support for our campaign and expressed a desire to proceed “with some urgency”. This is good news, since we have always believed that in order to move ‘away from home’ toilets up the political agenda, we needed recognition for our campaign at the highest levels.
The 2006 Loo of the Year Awards has been our most successful yet, with over 1100 entries across the 55 different entry categories. We held three Awards Presentation this year ' one in Belfast City Hall, attended by 100 participants in Ireland, one in The Festival Theatre, Pitlochry, for our Scottish participants and also attended by over 100 and our UK National Awards, at The National Motor Cycle Museum, near Birmingham on 8th December, which was attended by nearly 500 guests' including The Duchess of Northumberland who picked up one of our major Awards Trophies for The Alnwick Garden. (Full results can be seen on the Awards website www.loo.co.uk)
2007 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Loo of the Year Awards and we are planning a number of celebratory functions to ensure that all those who clean, manage or provide ‘away from home’ toilets can share this important milestone.
We will be launching the 2007 ' 20th Anniversary Awards at The Cleaning Show, being held at the NEC between 13th and 15th March. We hope you will come and see us on stand H17.
We could not run the BTA campaign without funding from our corporate champion and ordinary members or the Loo of the Year Awards without substantial sponsorship and I thank all of our members and sponsors for their support this year.
I believe the campaign is on the threshold of some significant political developments and the Awards are poised for further substantial growth in 2007.
All of us at the BTA/LOY wish you a very successful 2007.
Richard Chisnell
Director BTA/LOYA Friday, December 22, 2006
