Toilet scheme does not work
Well done to Major Tom Wye and his wife Lesley for carrying out their research at personal expense, so that they could advise the overview and scrutiny committee of the feasibility of possibly closing many of Worthing's public toilets and adopting a scheme whereby shops, public houses etc., are paid to allow the public to use the ones on their premises.
From their account of a visit to Richmond, where the scheme is used, to see how it works, it obviously does not!
No matter where you live, public loos are essential to daily life, there is no question.
Imagine if we had implemented the scheme here in Worthing.
We had thousands of people here for Birdman and thousands for the carnival procession.
Is it to be suggested that all of those people would have flocked into shops and pubs just for the loo?
Tom and Lesley, you found out what almost every one of us feels – it's not a good system and let's hope a way can be found to finance keeping the ones we have.
