The Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors Association (CPHVA) has given its backing to a new award that recognises schools which care about pupils’ toilet facilities.

CPHVA officials have joined forces with the Schools Council UK and British Toilet Association to support the Education and Resources for Improving Childhood Continence’s Bog Standard campaign.

Successful schools will get an award certificate and will be able to use the logo on marketing materials, helping them gain recognition from parents and the local community for their efforts. Schools with toilets that are properly cleaned, well-stocked and in good working order are being encouraged to enter.

The drive was launched after a recent survey found that 160 UK schools and 49 school and specialist nurses quizzed wanted a minimum standard for school toilet facilities.

Campaign manager Nickie Brander said: “The School Toilet Award aims to flush out the bad toilets and recognise the good. Recent research indicates that 40% of secondary school pupils think their school toilets too disgusting to use and 38% of girls won’t use their school toilets. Bog Standard aims to encourage and support schools to make all school toilets meet the needs of pupils.”
