The Government has once again shown its lack of interest in introducing
any legal obligation on Local Authorities to provide public toilets.

Local communities are not being involved in determining "appropriate
levels of provision" and toilet closures are accelerating
in advance of the DDA Compliance deadline this October.
Public toilets are being used as political footballs and, as a
discretionary service are at the whim of Local Authority political
expediency. BTA Director, Richard Chisnell, met with Michael Howard
in Folkestone on 27 th March, following Shepway District Council's
decision to shut all 26 public conveniences - at a stroke. He urged
the Leader of the opposition to include the issue of public toilet
provision in the next Conservative Party Election Manifesto. This
would, he emphasised guarantee the Conservatives a significant
number of additional votes, judging from current level of anger
and frustration being felt all over Britain by local residents.
